Loop Engineering Era Ends as Industry Shifts to Graph Engineering

This marks a watershed moment for AI agent development after a rapid succession of industry shifts. Just six weeks earlier, on approximately June 6, 2026, Steinberger’s post titled “Designing Cycles to Prompt Agents” had accumulated 8.4 million views, establishing loop engineering as the dominant paradigm. Together, his two posts on loop and graph engineering exceeded 11 million combined views.

The Rise of Loop Engineering

Loop engineering originated from Geoffrey Huntley’s Ralph method, proposed in July 2025. This method enabled AI agents to run continuously until a goal was achieved by bypassing context window limitations.

Between April and May 2026, tools such as Codex and Claude Code introduced /goal commands to streamline workflows. The Codex /goal feature enables a conversation thread to consistently progress toward a defined outcome across multiple interactions, providing a completion condition specifying what state should be achieved, how to verify success, and which constraints must always be maintained.

Boris Cherny, creator of Claude Code at Anthropic, captured the momentum of this era when he stated at Anthropic’s developer conference: “I no longer prompt Claude directly. Instead, I run loops that prompt Claude and determine what to do next. My job is to write the loops.”

The Graph Engineering Paradigm

Graph engineering makes multi-agent organizations programmable through two types of graphs: the static Org Graph (defines who is responsible for what) and the dynamic Work Graph (defines what needs to be done now and how tasks flow).

This represents the culmination of a year-long evolution in AI development practices. A year before July 2026, prompt engineering was a core skill; by 2025 to early 2026, the focus shifted to designing loops; by July 2026, the industry shifted to designing graphs composed of multiple loops where each agent runs its own loop connected through dependencies.
