The AI Scaling Gap

According to a BearingPoint study, only 13% of companies are on track with their AI initiatives. The research reveals a striking paradox: nearly three-quarters of companies surveyed reported positive financial results from AI, yet regulatory hurdles and challenges integrating AI with legacy IT systems are preventing large-scale adoption.

Less than a third of companies surveyed could move beyond pilot projects, exposing the significant gap between early experimentation and enterprise-wide deployment.

What’s Blocking Progress

Two barriers dominate the scaling challenge. About 40% of respondents cited legal regulations as the main obstacle to scaling AI, while 34% pointed to difficulties integrating AI into existing IT systems.

These findings carry particular weight in Europe, where regulatory frameworks like the AI Act create additional compliance complexity for organisations attempting to roll out AI solutions across borders.

Financial Results Paint a Mixed Picture

While most companies see positive returns from AI, the gains vary significantly:

  • Around 24% of companies reported AI-driven cost savings of at least 10%
  • Only 4% of companies reported AI-driven revenue growth of at least 10%

Nearly two-thirds of companies estimated excess staffing levels of at least 10%, suggesting cost reduction remains the primary AI benefit.

Geographic Variations in Implementation

AI adoption rates differ across major markets. China leads with 20% of companies reporting comprehensive AI implementation, followed by the US with 18%. Germany reported only 8% of companies with comprehensive implementation.

Overall, the share of companies with AI deeply integrated into operations rose to 11% in 2026 from 7% in 2025—a modest improvement that underscores the ongoing scaling challenge.

Recent AI Product Announcements

The market continues to evolve with new model availability. Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, 2026. Amazon Web Services made GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Luna, and other models available through Amazon Bedrock.

Apple’s Siri AI is set to expand to French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish via iOS 27.2, which is already in testing.
