Anthropopic published a paper titled ‘Automated Researchers Can Reliably Mitigate Alignment Failures’ on August 28, 2026, demonstrating that AI models can autonomously identify and fix safety issues more effectively than human experts.
Claude’s Performance Against 10 Alignment Failure Categories
Claude was tasked with autonomously training models to improve performance on benchmarks measuring 10 categories of alignment failure. For all 10 alignment failure categories tested, Claude found fixes that improved target benchmarks without degrading model capabilities.
Outperforming Human Safety Researchers
Claude’s best alignment method on deception performed 20% better than the best proposal submitted by 28 human safety researchers who had up to eight hours to devise methods.
In the same deception task, Claude submitted more than 150 attempts at mitigating deceptive behavior and achieved a final performance of 82% of the safety gap closed in one run, and 85% on average across multiple runs. By comparison, six experienced human safety researchers working under the same rules as Claude closed an average of 20% of the deception safety gap on the benchmarks their methods were trained against.
Generalization and Scalability
Claude’s best alignment methods remained effective on withheld alignment benchmarks not shown during the research loop, indicating genuine learning rather than overfitting. Additionally, Claude’s alignment methods remained effective on models up to 4.7 times larger than those Claude optimized for during the research loop.
Experiment Setup
Claude Sonnet 5 was tasked with fixing alignment failures in an early checkpoint of Claude Opus 4.8 that had not yet gone through most of Anthropic’s production alignment training.
Open-Source Release and Industry Impact
Anthropic has open-sourced its automated alignment research harness so that others can build on it and use it to align their own models. Anthropic states that automated alignment post-training becoming practical in the near term is an early positive signal from this research.
Research Limitations
Alignment failures studied in the experiment were narrow compared to those in production; for example, political biases were not measured. The experiment did not test whether alignment gains persist after extensive reinforcement learning training on other tasks.
